This dynamic kills Agile in practice - teams are supposed to be able to pivot based on customer signals but if those signals take months to arrive, they end up pivoting based on changing stakeholder whims instead. They act faster than they learn, which simply increases the amount of waste.

To fix this, product managers came up with the idea of leading indicators. A leading indicator is connected to a trailing indicator. For example, our NPS might be low because we spam users with the NPS survey too much. If we spam them less, NPS will go up. Note that I said *might.*

The relationship between a leading and trailing indicator is a *hypothesis.* This is the kind of thing that real scientists do experiments to test, and try to prove causality, but computer science is not a science, so we get more of a YOLO approach here. And a lot of teams fall into this trap.
