This can be so hard to explain to both users & developers of these platforms. The narrative that they let people do the things they already want to do is so appealing, but wrong beyond the most trivial level. The technology is not delivering neutral "value" - it's shaping behavior.

That shit isn't inevitable, and it isn't as simple as "the internet ruins democracy."
Design better online spaces, get better online communities.
