I have a couple of neighbors who replaced their natural grass with artificial turf. I call their properties “water slides” because the stormwater wasted from runoff is much greater than the water used for the average irrigation needs of natural grass. www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/17...

Artificial turf would have to boost the urban heat island effect as well since plastic, unlike vegetation, does not collect and retain water (which has a cooling effect) but sheds H2O and retains heat from the sun. It’s bad for the urban environment all the way around, even on small properties.

Artificial lawns sent up to 58.2% of rain across the surface in a 2021 experiment, and the runoff carried loose plastic blades and thatch with it.
