A horrible bipartisan 1-2 punch:
WWI vets blocked the US Capitol in 1932 to demand that Hoover pay their bonuses.
To avoid the same protests POTUS FDR shipped large numbers of bonus army vets to "rehabilitation camps" in the South.
Hundreds of these veterans died in a hurricane in 1935 as a result.

#OtD 28 Jul 1932 the US government sent in the army to attack WWI vets and their families with tanks, fixed bayonets, teargas and sabres, killing three, when vets marched demanding wartime bonuses they were promised. stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/1001...
