This was particularly because of Trump and Co's actions and propaganda during the Covid outbreak 6 years ago. While antivaxxers have always existed, they did not have a platform in national politics (certainly not US national politics) until Donald Trump rose to power. Trump platformed them. 2/5

Trump gave them a platform because doing so was politically expedient at the time, and continued to be politically expedient as the MAGA movement increasingly rejected science, evidence, and other basic tools to separate reality and fiction. 3/5

The vast swathes of places where herd immunity is failing is all in deep red counties. This is not a coincidence. The MAGA movement is an antivax movement and is solely responsible for the collapse of vaccination rates in the US in the past 10 years. 4/5
