Rather than as a stereotypical witch, Alice is depicted as a typical woman from the early 17th century wearing shackles: the residents of Roughlee, where Alice was born, wished to have her humanity emphasised. In fact, Roughlee’s community was involved in every aspect of the statue’s production.
