A well-trod footpath ribboned away through the overgrowth, and the Gatehound was happy to walk the two or three miles in companionable silence, heart drifting back in time to similar strolls with Grady, sometimes on the hunt for child-stealing wolves, often just to get away from the crush of society which oppressed Grady so badly, making him short-tempered and sullen.
Unfortunately, they had not gone far before Rowan started talking.
“It’s just a regular school. We don’t sit around plotting wolf hunts and dissecting fey, all right? And no one knows about the key—”
“One person does.”
“Don’t interrupt me. You’re not going to find the key going door-to-door asking for it. So don’t talk to anyone unless it would be weird not to, and then, don’t say anything to give yourself away. I’m going to get you a visitor’s pass for the day, you’re going to point out this ‘Owen Abernathy’ to me when you see him, and that’s it. As far as anyone else is concerned, you’re just some guy, all right?”
You would benefit from some oppressive society, thought the Gatehound.
