My grandfather (who'd never seen beyond Alabama or Tennessee) was drafted in 1943. In the Army he saw North Africa, France, Belgium, and Germany. His unit was part of the occupation force in Nuremberg after the war, and as a common soldier he got tickets to be in the audience for these trials.
