This eugenics is getting out of hand

Flowchart tracing the parentage of cultivated citrus. At top are five ancestral species: kumquat, micrantha, citron, pure mandarin (Type 1), and pummelo (two accessions, P1 and P2). Blue arrows marked with male (♂) and female (♀) symbols show direct crosses: kumquat and the mandarin lineage produce calamondin; micrantha and citron produce Mexican lime; citron crossed with mandarin-lineage parents produces lemon, Rangpur lime, and rough lemon; and mandarin crossed with pummelo produces sour orange. Dark red arrows labeled "introgression" trace gradual pummelo gene flow into the mandarin lineage: this produces early-admixture mandarins (Type 2), then late-admixture mandarins (Type 3), then sweet orange, and finally — crossed once more with pummelo — grapefruit.
