5/17 This is something I wrote about in The Hormuz Crisis Volume 1. The central problem was never simply "open or closed". Maritime systems can continue operating while progressively degrading through risk, insurance, selective access and competing claims of control.

6/17 There is an older historical parallel too. I wrote a while ago about the Danish Sound Dues, when Denmark effectively taxed access to the Baltic because geography allowed it to control the route. The eventual international response was to dismantle that system, not merely reduce the charge.

7/17 Hormuz is not becoming the Sound Dues. But the underlying question is similar: can a state turn unavoidable geography into permission-based access? Modern maritime law was built in part to prevent critical international waterways functioning like privately controlled toll gates.
