6/16 For seafarers, meteorology is partly about forecasting. But an equally important part is climatology. We know broadly what winds, currents, temperatures and sea states are normally expected in particular places at particular times of year. We plan around those probabilities.

7/16 And this is the distinction I used to teach. Weather tells you what is happening. A forecast tells you what is likely to happen shortly. Climatology tells you what normally happens. ENSO does not tell you the weather in November. It tells you that "normal" may be a poor assumption.
