10/16 Trump’s order to reduce US-South Korean exercises belongs in that context. It may be diplomacy towards Kim Jong Un. It may also reduce demands in a theatre losing its carrier. The reference to Seoul refusing to assist against Iran makes the connection difficult to ignore.

11/16 This does not mean the Pacific is undefended. Land-based aircraft, submarines, destroyers, missile defence and allied forces remain. But exercises produce readiness and carriers provide mobile airpower. Removing both weakens reassurance and creates opportunity elsewhere.
