2/20 The statement says that if Iran damages “Ships, Cargo, or anything related thereto”, compensation will come from Iranian money held by the United States. Many people immediately read that as “problem solved.” Unfortunately, maritime law rarely works like that.

3/20 The first issue is authority. A social media post is not, by itself, a compensation mechanism. International shipping already has established systems for compensation involving insurers, P&I Clubs, courts, arbitration and claims processes. None of those disappear overnight.
