It's normal that a new objective takes over when one is satisfied, but the main flow in a ground battle is to complete an objective, unlock the next objective, and complete that. This continues until the final objective is complete and the battle is won.

Ground battles center on this brutal combat grind. You have to manage how much damage you take vs mowing through huge numbers of enemy troops (either on the way to the objective, or as part of the objective).

I think the grinding your way through while managing health (and using magic that you build up for more powerful attacks) is an interesting loop, but I do think how Drakengard handles defeat is... boring.
