I don't care about this that much, but I actually don't think this underlying premise is true. There are plenty of hazard events we remember that don't have a human name attached to them -- 9/11, the Chicago Fire, the BP Oil Disaster, the Tax Day Flood, etc. www.nytimes.com/2024/09/07/o...

in a way, both cold and hot weather events tend to have names in germany, because most high and low pressure systems get named. this has done fuck all to make germans take heat waves seriously.

There's something about us giving it a name, though, isn't there? doesn't have to be a human name, but the act of naming makes an event something we can refer to in a more tangible way, makes an event into an entity, maybe

Extreme temperature events are already named in association with areas not dissimilar to tornadoes and seismic events, no? Agree that, while good to broach the idea, the need simply does not merit attention.

It also seems weird to write an entire op-ed about wanting to name another type of hazard when the Weather Channel just tried -- and I think largely failed -- to do so with winter storms... The Pacific Northwest Heat Dome is a name.
