For a bit of fun, watch Tristan and me discuss the merits of hoplites vs legionaries. The format supposes that we should fight our corner, but there really is no point pretending hoplites could have the edge, so we ended up just giving a nice series of mini-lectures www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTGQ...

When I started the video I also had the slight hunch that the scholar calling one of his book chapters „Worthless Hoplites“ would not necessarily advocate for any kind of hoplite superiority haha

I wasnt aware, but now am positively surprised, that you were exposed to the 'Asterix'-comics as well (as you said in the video upon Tristan showcasing the lorica segmentata). Though its interesting the comics show Roman legionnaires using common spears (not gladii or pila) as primary weapons.

I think the Romans won, so ... the Romans? Greek culture was stronger than Roman culture, though. Which is why all wanna be aspiring roman elites had a Greek tutor for their kids and learnt Greek rhetoric.

Was there anything that made Greek hoplites special? Reading what you write about them they don’t come off as very competent but from my understanding they were heavily employed by the Persians and have a decent track record against them.
