Aug. 21, 1926: New York Gov. Al Smith and his New Jersey counterpart, A. Harry Moore, shake hands on their respective sides at the middle of the nearly completed Holland Tunnel. They are given an inspection tour of the passage under the Hudson River, which is due to open in 1927.
