I'm not well-versed in Hawaiian history -- I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm just a dude who took Hawaiian Studies classes like any other Hawai‘i public schooler + an extra course in college. But I do know the flag came during the reign of Hawai‘i's first monarch, King Kamehameha I!

As much as the flag is a legacy of a proud Pacific Island nation that commanded the respect of and recognition from the Western imperialist interests that wanted to subjugate it, yeah, it does absolutely have the Union Jack on it despite Hawai‘i never having been a part of Great Britain.

This does beg the question - *why* did they decide to include a Union Jack as part of their flag? Because it was pretty?

Rest assured, the Irish are not the only ones lamenting the Union Jack's presence on the Hawaiian flag...! There's a movement among some Native Hawaiians to adopt a flag without colonialist or imperialist ties, so you'll also see the Kānaka Maoli flag flown around the islands!

The Kānaka Maoli flag designed by Gene Simeona. Features green, red, and yellow stripes with a crossed paddle insignia at the center.
