One of the greatest 'doh!' moments in the history of family history came shortly before the 1836 Act that introduced civil registration in England and Wales was due to come into effect. Someone noticed that there was no provision to record the *place* of birth or death on the new certificates... 1/

Schedules A & B from the 1836 'Act for registering Births, Deaths, and Marriages in England'. The boxes read 'When Born' and 'When Died' with no provision for recording the actual place of birth or death.

A number of other matters also needed clarifying and on 30 June 1837, the day before before civil registration was introduced, an 'Act to explain and amend Two Acts passed in the last Session of Parliament, for Marriages and for registering Births, Deaths, and Marriages, in England' was passed. 2/
