This is so fucking funny. Look at the replies. These ding dongs are attacking each other over how much they hate AI and if its in the right ways to the point that they are mad about *synthid* and *do not care* if its accurate at all. Like. At all. We told you this watermarking shit was useless

Quite note here that for the witch hunt in question, the PFP of the person that we labeled carries the SynthID watermark from Google's Gemini. All images generated by Gemini now carry an invisible watermark that survives light edition. You can learn more here: deepmind.google/models/synth...

i think google purposefully putting it only in the chat interface might've instigated a bunch of this. for openai's synthid checker you get a much nicer interface... sometimes i wonder if they did it this way specifically to get this type of response but i think that's too pessimistic

Not to defend them, but I think if you're going to try to scale something to improve trustworthiness you have to at least try meet people where they're at. Most laypeople will say "I know what AI is now and you don't invoke specific tasks by asking it. That's what clicking on things is for"

Tbh it's very weird that the only apparent method for detecting the SynthID is to ask an LLM a very specific question (but not too specific)
