#ResistanceRoots In 1961, the American Medical Association produced and distributed a 10-minute vinyl LP titled “Ronald Reagan Speaks Out Against Socialized Medicine.” It was the central piece of “Operation Coffee Cup,” an AMA campaign aimed at defeating Medicare and Medicaid legislation. /1

Cover of the LP “ Ronald Reagan Speaks Out Against Socialized Medicine.” In the recording, Reagan warns against encroaching government control over private citizens. He claims that “socialized medicine” is a method used to impose statism or socialism. He warns that if the state can dictate healthcare, it will eventually regulate education, careers and all personal choices. Reagan closes the 10-minute address with a call to action, warning that a failure to stop Medicare would cost Americans their freedom:
“And if you don’t do this and if I don’t do it, one of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children, and our children’s children, what it once was like in America when men were free.”
The original release was a single-sided, 12-inch vinyl LP packaged in a gatefold sleeve. The left pocket typically held campaign inserts, including a list of U.S. Congress members and a guide with 10 suggestions on how to write an effective letter to politicians.
