what is it about political journos and their violently beige cultural tastes? working theory is that they are so tuned into thinking about political leaders and movements and polling that they can experience art only in the most general terms

Do you think music is a bit of an outlier for this, though? I’d imagine Freeman et al wouldn’t be waxing lyrical about Jack Vettriano. It’s a long time since I read it, but the book “Fear of Music: Why People Get Rothko But Don't Get Stockhausen” was a decent read about this.

yeah you’re right. I think it’s because music has a special hold over people’s identities… maybe because it taps so directly into our emotional worlds. people go a bit nuts if you question their musical tastes but have a more clinical view about art preference. I’ll look up that book, thanks
