If the action needed to prevent climate breakdown wouldn't make us better off, would we take it anyway? We did with Covid. The UK spent an estimated £310–410 billion, with no expectation of an economic return. How fortunate that the action needed to tackle climate change is different! 🧵👇 #PEBuk

2️⃣ The Climate Change Committee's modelling shows that after around an initial net investment of £320 billion, the transition to net zero becomes cash positive, with annual savings to the UK economy growing to almost £40 billion a year, and rising.

3️⃣ Why? Because clean energy is cheaper to run than fossil fuels, well-insulated homes cut bills permanently, abundant active / public transport save money and boost health. The list goes on. Few households can afford the upfront costs. But governments can, borrowing much more cheaply than business.
