It's rare to see how lobbyists operate. But the Epstein-Mandelson correspondence shows us what happens all the time: plutocrats and government ministers conspiring against the public interest. This is why all lobbying should be in the public domain, but despite Labour and Con promises, it's not. 🧵

Here's the context: When Mandelson was Business Minister, Epstein wrote asking him to make only the cash portion (ie not equity etc) of bankers’ bonuses taxable. Mandelson's answer: “Trying hard to amend as I explained to Jes last night. Treasury digging in but I am on case.”

New Epstein emails show Peter Mandelson secretly advising JPMorgan’s CEO on how to fight Labour’s 2009 bankers’ bonus tax - even suggesting he “mildly threaten” the Chancellor. Mandelson was Business Secretary at the time. A year later, he was seeking work with JPM.

Imagine if the government was this enthusiastic and responsive to the needs of the public.

Very odd, Epstein, this poor kid from Coney Island had all these contacts and influence. The Miami based journalist Julie K Brown has always said follow the money. Dmitry Rybolovlev, links Epstein, Trump, Witkoff, Putin. There seem to be no degrees of separation anymore.

Re Epstein revelations, we should revisit Labour’s crush-the-left project - part Mandelson’s with protege McSweeney. In 2017 Mandy said at a Jewish Chronicle event, ‘I work every single day in some small way to bring forward the end of his [Corbyn’s] tenure.’ For personal as well as political gain?

That’s Bribery, isn’t it? And I think Starmer was a senior government prosecutor when the Bribery Act came in so I imagine he’s familiar with it…

I don’t think that’s entirely unreasonable. Under the EU Capital Requirements Directive III bankers’ bonuses were restricted to 2x base pay, and mainly payable in shares so staff were exposed to adverse impacts of their misbehaviour (Barings?). Makes some sense they should pay when they can cash out

I'd rather not read the Daily Fail but are good journalists following the Russian link? bsky.app/profile/timm...

I have no idea about this. But it is blowing my mind considering it. Have a look.

I'm guessing that the "Jes" in this message is that other moral paragon, Jes Staley, though I can't be sure. A Labour government minister, channelling the demands of his finance-bro chums. This, my friends, is how it happens. This is why we don't get what we want, or what we vote for.
