Unexpected Britain (12 Photos)
## A different view of **Britain**
In Windsor, a house leans over the cobbles. In Glasgow, a pigeon reads the paper from the Duke of Wellington’s head. Across Britain, a police box becomes a fish tank, a giant girl examines the street, and a crescent moon is built from beach stones.

### 🏚️ The Crooked House — Windsor, England, UK 🇬🇧
The little house is wedged between a stone building and a blue one, and it is the only one of the three that tips. Follow the green door frame and the bay window above it and you can see how far it has drifted. Historic England’s listing dates the timber-framed building to 1687 and describes it, very calmly, as standing “on considerable cant.”
**💡 Place Fact:** Its official name is Market Cross House, and it has been Grade II listed since January 4, 1950. The same list entry groups it with Windsor’s Town Hall and its neighbors on High Street as one historic set.

### 🏠 Dear Old Thing — By GRAFFMATT in Bristol, England, UK 🇬🇧
Here the house does not lean. It flies. A wooden shack, a windmill and an old car float up a pink gable wall, with a child sitting on the roof and an armchair stuck in the pile. “Dear Old Thing” is painted on the side of the car. The wall is at 107 West Street in Bedminster, and GRAFFMATT finished it in May 2026.
**💡 Nerd Fact:** The name comes from a real local shop. GRAFFMATT’s own entry says the Upfest mural was inspired by the antique shop Dear Old Thing on West Street.

### ❤️ Drone Heart — By JPS in Weston-super-Mare, England, UK 🇬🇧
A small drone hovers beside a dripping red heart, a spray can hanging underneath, as if it has just finished the job. The yellow sign on the same wall is real and warns of falling objects. JPS, the stencil artist Jamie Paul Scanlon, was born in Weston-super-Mare, and the Weston Mercury reports that he has painted works there in support of the Birnbeck Trust’s regeneration plans.

### 🦊 Longbridge Foxes — By Annatomix in Birmingham, England, UK 🇬🇧
The fox sits on a brick pillar beneath a concrete bridge, with real plants growing around its feet. Sharp orange and gray planes make it look like folded paper. Annatomix painted the Longbridge Foxes in 2023 for developer St Modwen on a railway bridge at the former MG Rover factory site. The Bromsgrove Standard puts the figures at around 15 feet tall, painted on what she called “some of the wettest brickwork I’ve ever had the pleasure of tackling.”
**💡 Nerd Fact:** Her animals are often described as origami, but Annatomix names geometry, low-poly modeling, crystalline structures and architecture as her influences. Origami, she says, has no influence on her work.

### 💍 I Love You Will U Marry Me — Park Hill, Sheffield, England, UK 🇬🇧
White letters run along a concrete bridge high between two blocks of the Park Hill flats: “I love you will u marry me,” with a name sprayed at the left end. The Star reports that Jason Lowe sprayed it in 2001 for his girlfriend, Clare Middleton. The couple never married, but the proposal stayed and became one of Sheffield’s best-known sights.
**💡 Place Fact:** When the owner, Urban Splash, removed the paint for concrete repairs in 2021, many people in Sheffield protested. In June 2022 the words went back in their original spot, together with the neon lettering that lights them at night.

### 🐺 All City Movement — By Jussi TwoSeven in Brighton, England, UK 🇬🇧
A black-and-white wolf runs across a white wall above the shops. It is one of five wolves Jussi TwoSeven painted around Brighton in May 2018 for All City Movement, part of the Brighton Fringe. Brighton Source explains that each wall shows the same wolf at a different stage of its stride, so together they work like a flip book spread across the city.

### 🛸 Microcosmic — By Rocket01 in Southampton, England, UK 🇬🇧
A woman in a green helmet studies a tiny landscape inside a glass globe. Mushrooms and plants grow beneath its curved surface, a blue butterfly rests on a leaf, and a small flying saucer hovers nearby. The suit and helmet belong to science fiction; the stained concrete behind them belongs to the parking garage at Westquay. Rocket01’s portfolio lists the piece as Microcosmic, painted for the Multi-Stories event in Southampton.

### 👼 Angel of the North — By Antony Gormley in Gateshead, England, UK 🇬🇧
Rust-colored wings stretch across most of the photograph, above a figure standing on a grassy rise with its feet together. Gormley’s page for the work gives its size as 22 meters high and 54 meters across. Gateshead Council commissioned it, and it was completed in 1998 on a hill in Gateshead.
**💡 Place Fact:** The hilltop was once part of a coal mine, and the Angel stands on the site of its former pithead baths, built in 1939; mining there ended in the late 1960s. Out of sight below the plinth, concrete piles reach down to solid rock 20 meters below, anchoring a sculpture built to withstand winds of more than 100 mph.
