They did this in tons to try and disguise that 4.8mil tons of diesel is just around 10 days of US consumption. We sold out Ukraine for a week and a half of diesel.

Current usa stockpiles of diesel are around 4.53bil gallons. If 4.8mil tons were dropped into our stocks that's 1.4bil additional gallons, or just about 1/3rd more added. If it were free, end to end, then prices would drop by about 25%. 7 dollars a gallon becomes $5.25. But it's not gonna be free.

I'll freely admit that I am not an economist, nor is this exactly how commodity pricing works...but the thought experiment easily shows this is an exercise in futility. Prices might go down some for a couple months. Its midterm fuckery; disguise the problem with a short term "fix."
