The Spotted Shag with durvillaea antarctica #AvianAugust #AvianAugust2026

A painting of a cormorant-like bird facing the left while standing in water with rocks on both sides. The bird is overall dark gray with tufts of fine feathers sticking up at the top of the head. There is a stripe of white that runs from the beak, through the eye, and down the belly to the underside of the tail. The feathers on the chin to the base of the throat are dark gray. There is a small smudge of turquoise at the base of the yellow beak. There are brown rocks on both sides of the bird have thin olive green seaweed growing on them that trails into the turquoise water. Behind the bird is a 4 inch diameter thin gold ring. The background is off-white. Next to the painting is a smaller bookmark with the bird facing the left while standing on a brown rock surrounded by grass. Below the bird is “spotted shag” in ultramarine blue.
