Emily M. Bender @emilymbender.bsky.social · 07/09/2026This part of the thread really brought out the 'splainers. I should have probably included a link to this encyclopedia article. When I say that "AI" doesn't refer to a coherent set of technologies, that is not idle commentary but actually based on scholarship. faculty.washington.edu/ebender/pape...faculty.washington.eduEmily M. Bender@emilymbender.bsky.social... and then remind everyone that the phrase "artificial intelligence" doesn't refer to a coherent set of technologies. What it does do, inter alia, is help people get VERY excited when OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepMind and the like go around making very big claims. >>3:21 PM · Sep 7, 2026 · 0 views 37613
Liz Fong-Jones (方禮真) @lizthegrey.com · 07/09/2026↪ Replying to @emilymbender.bsky.socialwhich has consistently been the subject of the bailey-motte. "ai is unproven technology" -> "no, look at classical ML, that's been around decades" (while still holding out the newest thing as established) 140 0
Noisecolor @noisecolor.bsky.social · 07/09/2026↪ Replying to @emilymbender.bsky.socialI don't get the controversy. Of course it's not coherent set of tech. Think of all the stuff we called ai way before chatgpt like chess engines, video games characters, freaking Roomba robot,... It's just an expression and an acronym that's fast, easy to understand. It's how linguistics work. 120 0
Forth 🏝️ @forthrast.com · 08/09/2026↪ Replying to @emilymbender.bsky.socialI read through this and I think you make effective critiques of how the term is used and weaponised (I especially like sections 6 and 7), but I’m really struggling to come around on the core claim, and I’d be interested in a response to two angles I don’t see addressed here 100 0
