Apropos of a co-panelist's remarks today: If you're asking how do we get people to trust this technology, you're asking the wrong question. Should be: How do we build technology that is trustworthy & sufficiently transparent so people can make informed decisions abt when to trust it.

So, effectively, you have to build a new person. Because people are the exact same way: They have to build up their trustworthiness. But even if you get a machine to that level, there are people who don't trust *people*, so that's another interesting dilemma.

People should also ask why corps are so desperate to insert it in everything? Why are they making it the default in their products, and making it harder to opt out?

On one hand I very much agree that that is the better question to ask. On the other hand there are limits to how far this will get you: sufficient transparency ex ante isn't always possible (e.g. the telephone) and trustworthiness also comes from the experience of using it and succeeding/failing?

People resist change. I still do not fully trust the automatic gearbox on my new car? Getting people to trust technology is a long term investment, you cannot force people, and they will look for the slightest chance to say "Look it breaks easily" It has to be made "bulletproof" to be trusted.
