emotional neglect is hard to heal from because instead of pointing to evidence (trauma) you're trying to point to something that wasn't there, which as a child by definition you have no frame of reference to. the parent has a frame of reference,(their parents) so as to justify their behavior 1/2

This sounds about right. Now that my mom is over 80 and has health issues, there’s no way for me to point out the tiny things that *are* evidence, because she doesn’t remember. I can’t go no contact, but I’m definitely minimal contact.

but the child of course, doesn't know that frame of reference, so gathering a sense that something is wrong is like trying to gather very subtle evidence, i.e. it can take a lifetime. in my lived experience its come out as feeling like the abuse of gaslighting, albeit perhaps unintentionally 2/2
