I was asked how I draw/shade teeth and I promised I'd make a mini tutorial of how I approach this :D This is the simplest I could make it without making it too confusing. Maybe it could help someone! 💚 / pt. 1 [ #art #tutorial #teeth #furry ]

An art tutorial explaining how an artist Katry approached drawing and shading teeth in digital illustration.

1st image: A simple colored sketch of a stylized dogs mouth. The text underneath reads: "Base sketch - always very loose just to help me think about the shapes in more basic form."

2nd image: Same artwork just with more shading. Text reads: "Adding shading. Choosing similar darker colour but adjusting the colour wheel slightly so that it's slightly different shade. It makes it feel more natural and less flat. The shading is definitely more focusing on the 'outside' of the individual teeth. Im careful not to over-do it on the smaller front teeth - I would like to keep them more uniform as this creates more breathing space for the art and doesn't make it too odd looking."

3rd image, text reads: "Adding even darker colour more 'centering' the teeth. Not too dark, just enough so it creates dimension. I'm starting to fix up m y shapes here ad around this time."

4th image: "Using the first base colour, I create a light outline on the outside bits of the teeth. I do not do this for areas where they touch gums, the shading there is enough. It creates depth and makes your teeth look more 3D."

5th image: "The rest of my process is cleanup. I shape the gums more, clean up shading and add dark lineart back where its needed. I also removed some of the shading from the smaller incisors, as I did want them more uniform and flat."

6th image: "Final touch is the white shiny bits. Mouth is wet and glossy and so are teeth. Since my lighting was established from the right side, I will add big white lines slightly to the central-right of each canine. For the incisors, I will add this sparingly, mostly picking one for brighter spot. The rest will get some lightening up on the spiky tips."

/pt. 2 💚 Additional comments! Also helpful tip: the way I personally think about shading teeth is how I would approach shading metal - just much less reflective (stick to one small colour palette!!) . If you know how to shade metal, you know how to shade teeth! :D
