A works cited page can be experienced as an afterthought, the thing that some people, definitely not always me, rush to put together at the end of writing or the pages that are skipped while reading. But citations get counted, and that accounting signifies authority and allocates real resources.

So, we did some of our own counting. We analyzed 513,564 citations across 13,257 peace studies articles published between 2015 and 2022. 98% of the most-cited works in our dataset (those receiving 14 or more citations) were from scholars exclusively at institutions in high-income countries.
