When Kotaku, stupid and useless and wrong, just like it has been for years says fans they mean "people who have never read Ghost in the Shell, watched any of the movies, or watch any of the TV shows". Yes, fans, people who famously are unfamiliar with the art they are fans of. 🧵

Ghost In The Shell Fans Are Baffled By The New Horny Adaptation

Science Saru's 2026 adaptation of Ghost in the Shell is finally here, and its goofy and raunchy vibes are perplexing those who haven't read Masamune Shirow’s original 1989 manga

FWIW there is that old Fandom Thing where subtext doesn't exist, and nobody's horny or political or w/e unless they're wearing a giant sign and turning to the camera to announce it directly to the audience. OTOH Oshii's '95 movie opens with leering at a naked body, so some ppl are beyond saving.

Before you say, "But Jer, that's just the clickbait headline! You didn't read the article!", I read the article, and it is also wrong. Stand Alone Complex has 10 million Kusanagi ass shots. Here's a famous one!

This has resulted in an influx of anime-only Ghost in the Shell fans flooding Reddit and X with posts expressing confusion or dissatisfaction with the direction of Science Saru’s adaptation. Likewise, reviewers on Letterboxd and IMDb have accused the studio of “character assassinating” Major Motoko Kusanagi and ruining Ghost‘s “serious and dark” aesthetic.
