I was writing novelettes before I knew what a novelette was. They started out as short stories, but I kept writing them too long. Also, I’m not sure short stories are supposed to have chapters in them but to me it was a natural way to organise my stories. It meant that there were a lot of short story competitions I couldn’t enter because my stories were often five times longer than the specified word count but I didn’t care.
