Things living rent free in my head: A pair of deaf parents were so happy to learn that their kid was deaf too. "I am so happy my child will experience deaf culture." Like I get it that the parents were worried about being isolated from their kids... but cheering at a disability diagnosis...?

Always makes me think if -as we progress in medicine and treatments- other subcultures based on disability or neurodivergency might reject treatment to preserve the unique culture they built.

Having a language barrier (written, body language, spoken) in any way really makes a group split off from the majority faster than anything else. The autistic community tends to be a little insular from communication barriers. A step in the right direction would be teaching sign/braille...
