Today's Pfizergate ruling is a landmark. The EU court clearly said that the Commission was wrong in its decision on the text messages between president Ursula von der Leyen and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla. The decision can't be read other than as stern rebuke for the Commission. Some key takeaways 🧵

UN Convention against Corruption. Art. 9.3. " Each State Party ...take... measures as may be necessary...to preserve the integrity of accounting books, records, financial statements or other documents related to public expenditure and revenue and to prevent the falsification of such documents".

Very telling that only a foreign media, neither an EU media, nor the Institutional EU oversight bodies, has the interest to protect good governance and anti-corruption measures in the EU.

Kinda wild that this is happening in the wake of 'Signalgate'. It does boost confidence in EU institutions that they can and will hold one and other accountable, although arguably, in this case it probably comes across more as damage control.

First a quick reminder about the facts of the case: NYT journalist @matinastevis.bsky.social had asked the Commission for the texts, but the official reply was the cryptic "we don't hold documents matching that description". Matina had also first reported that these texts were exchanged.
