I had a chance to talk to Lisa Frank, Pittsburgh's Chief Operating & Administrative Officer. I knew that under Mayor Ed Gainey, the Dept of Public Works had reduced injury rates 59%, which is wonderful in itself, but also saved millions of $. Got to hear some stories! (I'm a process wonk.) 1/5

Fabulous post, Janet. My sister-in-law has worked on this initiative and I’m super proud of what the administration has accomplished! The main point is that the city is protecting its people but it also saves us a lot of money by preventing injuries to its workers.

This honors people’s ability to make important decisions about their jobs that both improves the quality of their job performance and also demonstrates concern for their wellbeing. Definitely a win - win!

People hurt themself jumping down from trucks instead of using the steps. They'd been getting lectured not to jump & ignoring the lectures. Turned out the steps were freezing cold in winter, & they didn't have good boots. Bought them good boots. Jumping stopped. Reduced injuries & saved $. 2/5
