People in Philly have been noticing more lightning bugs this year. I was curious to see if that was showing up in inaturalist data. I saw one or two in 2024, but never got pics of them. Got pics of 3 in 2025, & have already managed to get pics of 6 this year. Not seeing this in inat data...yet!

a simple little bar graph of observations per year of 4 animals: the lightning bug, raccoon, opossum, and snakes. Snakes looks like it's on a decline, racoon's pretty steady, possum totally steady, and lightning bug saw a jump last year, but not a huge one.

This is interesting bc I have been thinking that there are a lot more fireflies here than usual this year. I live in a hollow of the Blue Ridge Mountains of VA near a national forest, so we always have fireflies. But this year, looking across the hollow at night is like looking at the night sky!
