A story I tell often. I think about this guy and his kids a lot. With Gary Con coming up in less than two weeks, I wonder if I’ll see him there.

Screencap of a Facebook post from six years ago: I got to see Jason Charles Miller perform an acoustic set tonight.

After the set was over, a white guy approached me. It’s happened a lot over the course of the convention, as it is attended by mostly white guys. I could tell he’d had a drink or two, but he opened with apologizing for the question he was going to ask me, saying it might be a little awkward. He brought out his phone to show me a picture of three adorable children.

Two of them, a boy and a girl, were black.

He went on to say that he’d adopted them from the foster system and, being a nerd, he knew there was a likelihood that they may grow up to be nerds as well. He wanted to know how he could make sure that his daughter knew that she could do whatever she wanted when she grew up, whether it be playing D&D, dressing feminine, whatever.

I told him to always listen to her, even if he thinks it’s trivial. I told him to encourage her, whatever she decides to do, and to let her know that it’s okay to not like things too.

I told him to let her know that even if she’s only seen one episode, or read one book, or played one game, she’s a fan. She’s a player. She’s a gamer. I told him to let her know that no one should keep her from the things she likes.

I told him to keep opening the conversation with the right people. He thought it was so awkward to approach me, but I wanted nothing more than to help him help his daughter. I want to see her at my tables in a few years. I want to see her at the head of her own tables in many more years!

As long as he keeps coming to GaryCon, I will be here to answer any questions he has.

I’m going to keep being visible. This is why I do this. For people like him, and his daughter. I want every woman and woman of color to see that they belong in D&D.

I think about this story every lead up to Gary Con.

I’m pretty sure his kids have to be approaching double digits now if they aren’t already.
