Banshee. #poem #poetry Women are at the threshold, hair wild with grief, mouth opened wide against the night Banshee.

Women are at the threshold,
hair wild with grief,
mouth opened wide
against the night
Banshee.
Bad omen.
Death coming.
Something terrible
about to be named.
So some covered their ears.
They said,
Don’t listen to her.
They said,
She is hysterical.
She is vindictive.
She is confused.
She wants to destroy him.
But that is the oldest trick
blame the woman
for the screaming.
The banshee does not
cause the death.
She comes because
something has already died
in us.
She comes because
our bodies remember
what our mouth was forced
to bury.

She comes because
someone has spent years
mistaking silence
for peace.
And when we scream,
the walls tremble.
We wield no weapon
but the truth.
No spell
but memory.
No curse
but the refusal
to take the secret
back into our mouths.
We are witness
to what has already happened.
Our cry is the alarm
after the fire has already started.
The ancient sound
rises from all of us.
A terrible, holy wail
that women have carried
across generations
have found our voice.
We are the sound
of what you refused to hear.
