Known to us as players is different from what's known to the characters in the world. Yeah, we've known that lore for a long time, but it was never explored in the game world to any degree and never revealed to any characters in that world, as far as I know. Also, chronicle tauren origins?

Yaungol Migration in Chronicles volume one. The portion that detailed the original Yaungol, or as I prefer to call them Proto-Yaungol, eventually become the modern Yaungol, Taunka, and the Tauren. More lore known to us players but not to our characters, later said to be from a certian point of view.

Oh yeah, I've made a similar point about that in the past. That no, Yaungol aren't necessarily what the original Tauren looked like, we don't actually know what those original tribes were like, their culture, etc, because they underwent cultural erasure under the Mogu and physically diverged later.
