It's not barren. It's just immediately after the wheat harvest--hill in the background.
The State Dept. post is incredibly stupid and harmful, but that's a picture of productive farmland.
Also, that barn is likely not where the farm equipment for that field is kept. Probably a huge steel polebarn.
