The U.S. risks becoming an "island of tailpipes" that is cut off from global automotive innovation and dependent on domestic SUV/truck sales. Protectionist walls won't stop the erosion of markets abroad. The U.S. needs to get serious about strategic collaboration with the global leaders in China.

^ this, this is GM/ Fords goal. 70% of EVs were made in China last year ~7% in the U.S. GM & Ford have surrendered and lobbied to take U.S. consumers down with them, no thanks. Great piece!

Consider Japanese automakers in the 1980s: fears about job displacement gave way to knowledge transfer. U.S. manufacturers learned lean production, strengthened their capabilities. Similar for Tesla in China: Built their most efficient factory and drove industry-wide innovation.
