2/ Before colonization, gender fluidity was present among numerous Indigenous peoples on Turtle Island. The anishnabee Ozawwendib decided early to wear women’s clothes. She married several men: but that still did not stop her from also becoming a renowned warrior.

3/💡It would be anachronistic to call those people trans, non-binary or even Two-Spirit, decades or centuries after their deaths and before those terms were in use. And this would negate their agency.

4/ But people who tried to escape crushing social norms around gender, and people who were accepted for who they were, have always existed, just as much as LGB… Together, we are all members of the same family and share the same struggles. We protect each other FIERCELY and PROUDLY.
