As for educators working eagerly to convince the salescreeps, tech-but-not-subject-matter experts, and feather-light NextGen university admin that they’re on board, I guess they must hope their careers have time to peak before the bandwagon they’re on reaches its destination. Their students’ won’t.

Pedagogy is not some new, unsolved problem awaiting its Silicon Valley disruptor. If you want good teaching in any given subject, it’s there to be had. If you just don’t want to pay for it, then all we’re really talking about is how much you want something for nothing. That’s nothing new, either.

We know how to teach books in the age of AI: small classes, close reading, research-engaged learning (which is how you ’let students see you struggle’). The issue is nobody will hire and pay the requisite # of faculty to offer this.

bell hooks wrote about the classroom being a place of radical possibilities precisely because it is a place where students can learn to think for themselves. Any technology that offloads thinking should have no place in the classroom.
